Test your review link redirect
Before you print anything or brief your staff, walk the whole customer journey yourself: open the short link, give a rating, land on the review form and confirm the interaction was recorded. It takes about five minutes and catches almost every setup mistake.
Before you start
- A location with a Review page URL set, either on the location or inherited from Location Defaults. See Find your Google review link.
Test the happy path
- Sign in at my.trustaroo.app, open your business profile and select Copy link on the location you want to test.
- Open a private or incognito browser window and paste the link. Starting fresh matters, because a signed-in admin session can hide problems a customer would hit.
- Check the page itself: your business name is correct, the location name appears if you chose to show it, and the wording is the copy you expect. See Review page copy modes.
- Select 5 stars and continue.
- Confirm you reach the thank-you step and then the external review form. The form must have a star selector and a place to type, not just your business listing.
If you end up on a listing page rather than a review form, your destination URL is wrong. Go back to Find your Google review link or Facebook and other review platforms.
Test the low-rating path
Open the link again in a new private window and submit a rating below your threshold, for example 2 stars. You should see the private feedback form instead of the redirect. Type a short test comment and submit it.
Check that the contact email and phone you expect appear on that page. If they are missing, they are either empty or hidden. See Contact details on the feedback page.
The review filter compares the rating to your threshold. At or above it, the customer reaches a thank-you page and continues to your review site. Below it, they get the private feedback form. With the filter off nobody is asked to rate at all: the link forwards straight to your review page, so there is no thank-you page and no feedback form to test.
Test on a real phone
Desktop testing proves the link works. It does not prove the code is scannable. Once the flow is right, print one card, scan it with a phone camera under the lighting of the room it will live in, and walk the same path again. See QR code not scanning.
Also try one phone that is not signed in to a Google account, if Google is your destination, so you see what a customer in that situation experiences.
Confirm it was recorded
Open the Reviews table in Trustaroo. Both test interactions should appear with their rating, the location, and the device, operating system and browser you used. The redirected column tells you whether that visitor was sent to the external review page. Your test comment appears as private feedback.
If nothing shows up, see Reviews missing from the dashboard.
Test interactions are recorded exactly like customer ones. They appear in your scan counts, in the rating distribution and in the average score. Do your testing before you note down a baseline, keep the number of tests small, and remember that a handful of 5-star tests will flatter a new account's average until real ratings arrive.
What to test again later
Re-run this check whenever you:
- Change the Review page URL on a location or on Location Defaults.
- Turn the review filter on or off, or move your threshold.
- Add a new location, because a new location means a new short link.
- Change your review page branding.
- Notice a gap in the Reviews table where interactions used to arrive.
A two-minute re-test after any of those is much cheaper than a month of scans that went nowhere.
